After you cut the chain to the proper length with a chain cutting too and loop it around your sprockets, the master link is used to connect one end of the chain to the other. There are a number of master link styles available that require different tools for install, some you can clip with a simple wrench and others that require a specific tool. Rivet-Type Master Link (MLJ) (requires a Rivet Tool) A Rivet-style master link is arguably the strongest possible master link style and is designed much like the other standard links on the chain. It requires a special chain riveting tool to crimp the master link and is a permanent fastener. You will need to cut the chain with a special chain cutting tool for uninstallation.
